Overview

Education is the bedrock of development in any given society. Regrettably, Nigeria which has a population of over two hundred million, cannot adequately discharge this function of governance efficiently.

The Nigerian government admitted in July 2022 the reality of the existence of over 20 million out-of-school children. This menace asides from truncating the destinies as well as the future contributions of these children to national development, it has also resulted in vices such as drug addiction, cultism, prostitution, armed robbery, religious and political intolerance culminating into religious extremism and terrorism or political thuggery, etc. Regrettably, endemic poverty prevailing in the country especially in the North, has further complicated this crisis. Poverty has created nutritional challenges which must be resolved before the child will have the presence of mind to study.

The government through the ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management and its development partners, WFP, UNICEF, SDGs, etc have put in great deal of resources to sustaining its policy on the National Home Grown School Feeding Programme (NHGSFP) where millions of pupils are beneficiaries. But the quantity and inclusiveness of this policy has brought wide-spread criticism from various quarters and its sustainability as government come, government go thus, policies are changed.

The government that has this responsibility is clearly overwhelmed, hence, the need for individuals and organisations to rise to the occasion in order to salvage the situation has become so eminent.
HHI and its partners are at the forefront of several other initiatives to close rank with well-articulated programmes designed to close up gaps and to bring succour to these vulnerable children so that they can fully realize their full potentials and actualize their destinies hence, contribute their quota to national growth and development.
